Some, we consider our enemies.&nbsp;Often, after recognizing that they are not our friends, we avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there is an opposition with which it is most difficult with which to deal. It is those whom we consider our friends or those with whom we have spent a lot of time who break our hearts after turning against us. People we thought we could rely on crushed our confidences and expectations the most when they let us down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David had such adversaries. People who guided him, those that he knew fairly well, those who shared advice, and even those who went to the temple with him turned out to be those he could no longer trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although many in David\u2019s life betrayed him, including Absalom, his son, one man met the Psalm 55 description of the untrusty \u201cfriend.\u201d\u00a0That person was Ahithophel, David\u2019s confidant, and counselor (II Sam. 15:12).<br><em>\u201cAnd one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness\u201d II Sam. 15:31<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What a heartbreak and discouragement such relations have turned out to be. As David felt, we can also feel \u201cpained\u201d (Psalm 55:4) when those we relied on turn out to conspire against us and reveal that we had wrongly placed our faith in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spouses have felt pain similar to David\u2019s when their partner, who promised \u201cunto death, doeth us part,\u201d let them down. Friends have felt betrayed when those they trusted turned against them. Children who relied on both parents for security split up, leaving the youngsters with an uncertain future. Many have been betrayed by ones who were close to them. It is a heart-wrenching experience when trust is broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no instant relief from the hurt caused by betrayal. However, one can do what David found was the only solution to whom he could turn. That was to summon God\u2019s help and love to intervene and change the situation. David did that in dealing with a conspiracy involving Ahithophel.<br><em>\u201cAs for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.\u201d Psalm 55:16<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God heard and honored David\u2019s cry: \u201c\u2026 I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness\u201d (II Sam. 15:31b). Ahithophel\u2019s advice to Absalom turned out to be the wrong counsel (II Sam. 17:14, 23). Because his guidance shamed the adviser, Ahithophel eventually took his own life.<br><em>\u201cAnd when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.\u201d II Sam. 17:23<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All desire reliable, trustworthy friends. Often one has many. However, it often occurs when one is let down or even betrayed. No situation is beyond God\u2019s help. Do not be forlorn if you find yourself in a similar situation. There is hope.
