This sorrowful attitude over one\u2019s sins was a vital part of John the Baptist\u2019s ministry and is essential today when one is saved from the eternal wages of one\u2019s iniquities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a repentant person will usually change their behavior, merely changing one&#8217;s conduct will not save anyone.&nbsp;If a lifestyle change were necessary for salvation, those acts would be a type of good work, and no good deed can save anyone from the eternal wages of sin (Ephesians 2:8-9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John the Baptist illustrated that a broken heart over sin would produce a better life when he spoke to four types of people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To the religious but not righteous, John told them that if they were convicted of their sins, they would prove it by a lifestyle that showed \u201cfruits\u201d of their inward changes. Their changed heart would change how they lived, and others could see what the changes had done in their life (Luke 3:8).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To the ordinary people, he told them that a giving attitude would show a changed heart (Luke 3:11). John must have known that they were covetous of the things of this world and that they were not trusting God daily for their needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To the publicans, he also said there would need to be some changes in their lives.\u00a0Publicans were notoriously dishonest tax collectors.\u00a0John told them their spiritual remodeling should include honesty (Luke 3:13).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To soldiers, he did not tell them to quit the army.\u00a0He told them their change of heart would include halting unnecessary violence, lying, and dissatisfaction with their salaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A changed, repentant heart is proof of one\u2019s salvation.\u00a0The areas John said should change in lives over 2,000 years ago should still change today when one\u2019s life is altered by salvation.<br><em>\u201cTherefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.\u201d\u00a0II Corinthians 5:17<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Thought:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>\u201cSin and Hell are married unless repentance proclaims the divorce.\u201d \u2014 Spurgeon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Words to Understand:<\/strong><br>Fan: \u201cto separate chaff from the grain\u201d \u2014 Webster, 1828 Dictionary<br>Garner: to put grain in a storage facility for it<br>Impart:&nbsp;give<br>Latchet:&nbsp;a strap to fasten a foot to a sole or shoe<br>Mused: contemplate<br>Publicans: a collector of tributes and\/or taxes<br>Purge: get rid of<br>Remission: forgive; overlook<br>Repentance: \u201c\u2026 pain, regret, or affliction which a person feels on account of his past conduct \u2026\u201d \u2014 Webster, 1828 Dictionary)<br>Tetrarch: a governor of part of a province<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Reading:<\/strong><br><em>Luke 3<\/em><br><em>1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,<\/em><br><em>2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.<\/em><br><em>3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;<\/em><br><em>4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.<\/em><br><em>5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;<\/em><br><em>6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.<\/em><br><em>7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?<\/em><br><em>8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.<\/em><br><em>9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.<\/em><br><em>10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?<\/em><br><em>11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.<\/em><br><em>12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?<\/em><br><em>13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.<\/em><br><em>14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do?
