{"id":1258,"date":"2020-03-26T09:56:08","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T09:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/?p=1258"},"modified":"2025-09-16T08:55:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T08:55:40","slug":"daily-devotion-of-proverbs-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/proverbs\/daily-devotion-of-proverbs-26\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Devotion in Proverbs 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Prov-Hd-Color-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Artwork from 1611 KJV<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Prov26.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>HEAR the devotion and KJV chapter.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Daily Nugget:<\/strong><br><em>\u201c\u2026 15 The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth\u2026.\u201d Proverbs 26:13-16<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proverbs 26:13-16 describes the type of person who squanders his time on Earth and misses out on being all he could be.&nbsp;The person discussed is \u201cslothful.\u201d&nbsp;This type of person refuses to work or does all he can to avoid it.&nbsp;He is a \u201csluggard,\u201d and his laziness hurts him more than he realizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work is good and should not be avoided.&nbsp;It helps a person feel better about themselves as labor allows them to help themselves and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible talks a lot about work.&nbsp;Read some of what the Word of God teaches about laboring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>God works.\u00a0If the creator works, those whom He created should follow His example. Creation was some of God\u2019s work.<br><em>\u201cAnd on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made;\u2026.\u201d Genesis\u00a02:2\u00a0<\/em>Also: Exodus 20:9, Psalm 8:3.<br>God works at protecting His people. See Exodus 1:31.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus worked. If we are Christians, or \u201cChrist-like,\u201d we should emulate Jesus\u2019 work ethic.<br><em>\u201cBut Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.\u201d John 5:17\u00a0<\/em>Also: John 4:34.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God wants us to work.<br><em>\u201c\u2026 this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.\u00a012 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.\u201d II Thessalonians 3:10<br>\u201cAnd that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;\u201d I Thessalonians 4:11<br>\u201cSix days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:\u201d Exodus 20:9<\/em>\u00a0Also: Deuteronomy. 5:13, Psalm 104:23.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One will be happier if they work for what they get.<br><em>\u201cFor thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.\u201d Psalm 128:2<br>\u201cWealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.\u201c Prov. 13:11\u00a0<\/em>Those who try to get money the easy way without laboring for it often find that they are always broke and cannot keep what they have.<br><em>\u201cThere is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.\u201d Ecclesiastes. 2:24<\/em><br>Also: Proverbs 14:23, Ecclesiastes 3:13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God can bless a hard worker as He did Job.<br><em>\u201cHast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.\u201d Job 1:10<\/em>\u00a0Also:\u00a0Psalm 62:12, Ecclesiastes 3:13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is the work of the ungodly that God does not accept, and the godly should avoid.<br><em>\u201cAnd then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.\u201d Matthew 7:23<\/em>\u00a0Also: Psalm 101:3, Psalm 135:15, Proverbs 11:18, II Timothy 4:18.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A person\u2019s character is often judged by their work ethic.<br><em>\u201cEven a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.\u201d Proverbs 20:11<\/em>\u00a0Also: II Thessalonians 3:8.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a reward for laboring.<br><em>\u201cNow he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.\u201d I Corinthians 3:8<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serving God involves work.<br><em>\u201cBut watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.\u201d\u00a0II Timothy 4:5<\/em>\u00a0Also: Romans 16:12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worshiping God can involve working.<br>Israel had to work to make the Tabernacle and Solomon\u2019s Temple. See Exodus 40:33.<br>Work was required to repair the damaged temple so Israel could resume worship. See: Nehemiah 2:16.<br><em>\u201cJesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.\u201d John\u00a06:29<\/em> \u00a0Also: John 6:28, Ephesians 4:12.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God knows about our work.<br><em>\u201cI know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil\u2026.\u201d Revelations 2:2 <\/em>\u00a0Also: Proverbs 15:19.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One will not have his needs met if he does not work for them.\u00a0He will have a hard life and will find himself wanting.<br>\u201cThe sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.\u201c Proverbs 20:4<br><em>\u201cHe becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.\u201d Proverbs 10:4 <\/em> Also: Proverbs 12:24, Proverbs 15:19.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laziness (slothfulness) hurts a person!<br><em>\u201cThe desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.\u201d Proverbs 21:25<br>\u201cThe soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.\u201d Proverbs 13:4<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work is healthy and should be desired.&nbsp;It gives one a purpose.&nbsp;Laziness has often been a thief, robbing one of usefulness and pride (the right kind), and has destroyed and wasted many lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God has you here for a purpose.&nbsp;Ask the Lord to show you what He has for you to do, and do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today\u2019s Thought:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\u201cIf you\u2019re waiting for something to turn up, try turning up your sleeves and do the first thing you see that needs to be done!\u201d \u2014 Author Unknown<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Words to Understand:<\/strong><br>Dissembleth: deceiving others by not doing what it appears one is doing; deception<br>Potsherd: a broken piece of pottery<br>Slothful: a person that does not want to work<br>Sluggard: a lazy person<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today\u2019s Reading:<\/strong><br><em>Proverbs 26<br>1 \u00b6 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.<br>2 \u00b6 As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.<br>3 \u00b6 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool&#8217;s back.<br>4 \u00b6 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.<br>5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.<br>6 \u00b6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.<br>7 The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.<br>8 As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.<br>9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.<br>10 \u00b6 The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.<br>11 \u00b6 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.<br>12 \u00b6 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?
