{"id":1008,"date":"2019-09-18T09:43:08","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T09:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2025-05-07T08:49:52","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T08:49:52","slug":"daily-devotion-of-psalm-83","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/psalm\/daily-devotion-of-psalm-83\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Devotion in Psalm 83"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Psalms-539x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:438px;height:195px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Artwork from a 1611 KJV<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/www.devotionsfromthebible.com\/dvblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Psalm83.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>HEAR the devotion and KJV chapter.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Daily Nugget:<\/strong><br>Being a Christian is not always easy.&nbsp;It can be very discouraging and even scary when it seems the ungodly have the upper hand in life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, it just does not seem fair that a Christian is doing what the Lord commands, yet it seems he has more opposition than those directly in violation of God\u2019s commandments.\u00a0It can get to the point that believers desire God to deal with those people quickly.<br><em>\u201cThat men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.\u201d Psalm 83:18<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asaph, the musician, felt that way.\u00a0He wanted God to unleash His fury on the ungodly.<br>\u201cA Song or Psalm of Asaph. <em>Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.\u201d Psalm 83:1<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The music leader wanted God to persecute them (Psalm 83:15) and allow them to be ashamed of their unrighteous living (Psalm 83:16). Asaph also begged God to let them be confused and bothered by the sin they were committing (Psalm 83:17).\u00a0He even wanted God to take their lives (Psalm 83:17). Most of all, he wanted them to learn that there was a God and to respect Him and His people.<br><em>\u201cSo persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. 16 Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. 17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:\u201d Psalm 83:15-17<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asaph and others also pray and yearn for the same revenge on the ungodly.&nbsp;However, as much havoc and hatefulness toward God they spread,&nbsp;one day they will regret the sin they have committed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All believers were one day in a similar situation as the God-haters were.&nbsp;We were rebellious, often mocked the Lord, did not obey all we knew we should have, were content in our sinful state, and did not take God\u2019s commandments seriously.&nbsp;Still, He spared us. Although we would rather see those who mock God dealt with swiftly, I am glad, and so should you, that God is patient and long-suffering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am so glad I did not get what I deserved before being saved.&nbsp;I know some of my actions and sins must have made other Christians as upset as Asaph was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter what the ungodly believe, say, and do towards believers, we are not the ones at whom they are furious.\u00a0The Bible says it is God that they hate.\u00a0<br><em>\u201cThe world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.\u201d John 7:7<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A God-believing and God-obeying person is constantly watched and criticized by unsaved onlookers.&nbsp;The ungodly may recognize that they are unhappy and certainly would not admit it, but are and are also convicted about the way they are living.&nbsp;Rather than change their beliefs and behavior, it is easier for them to ridicule and attack those doing right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somehow, their attitudes and actions against Christians make them feel less guilty and maybe even justified. Ultimately, they are not attacking you.&nbsp;It is the God in Heaven and His commandments that they truly hate and despise.&nbsp;You are often just a local representative, and they take their guilt out on you, so take it with a grain of salt and be an even better ambassador for the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today\u2019s Thought:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\u201cIt is better to incur the world&#8217;s hatred by testifying against its wickedness than gain its goodwill by going down the stream with it.\u201d \u2014 Henry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Words to Understand:<\/strong><br>Holpen: help<br>Tumult: uproar; commotion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today\u2019s Reading:<\/strong><br><em>Psalm 83<br>1 A Song or Psalm of Asaph.
